17-year-old driving stolen van dies after slamming into semi near 43rd and Good Hope

MILWAUKEE --  A 17-year-old boy is dead following a crash near 43rd Street and Good Hope Road in Milwaukee early Thursday morning, January 19th. The crash involved a stolen van and a semi.

The victim in this case has been identified as Kahleel Moore.

"It sounded like a roll of thunder," said Teri Michel, who lives near where the crash happened.

The sound of the crash had Michel up and outside early Thursday around 5:00 a.m.

"We looked outside the front door and we were like 'wow, what's going on?' We didn't see the semi at first. Then we stepped outside and saw the semi laying across the road," said Michel.

Brown Deer police say the 17-year-old driver of a stolen minivan did not pull over for a traffic stop on Sherman near Woodley. Instead it sped ahead, running a red light and broadsiding a semi at Good Hope Road and 43rd.

Video from a business nearby shows the crash happening. Sparks fly as the semi rolls and skids.

Police say the minivan was crushed. It was stolen from the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Locust on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old driving the van was killed.

"The driver of that vehicle is deceased, and the driver of the semi is alive. He's at the hospital with non-life threatening injuries so he should be OK. We have the Milwaukee Criminal Investigation Team called out here, they've been called out they're investigating," said Brown Deer Police Sergeant Luke Kuehne.

Michel said she's not surprised at what happened due to stolen vehicles being commonplace. However, she said she's praying for all families involved.

"It kind of surprises me, five in the morning, that something like this would happen where I live, right outside my house," said Michel.

The Milwaukee County Investigative Team is leading this investigation, with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol.
