17-year-old shooting victim remembered at School for the Deaf

MILWAUKEE/DELAVAN -- Milwaukee police continue to search for the suspect responsible for opening fire on a group during a party near N. 34th and Center Wednesday morning, July 11th. The shooting killed 17-year-old DeQuan Carter, and injured three others.

Police say the shooting incident happened around midnight in front of a home where family had gathered for a party. FOX6 News learned that party was to celebrate the teen's father's release from prison.

Officials say Carter died at the scene. Three of the Carter's cousins were sent to the hospital with bullet wounds. Police say the three victims injured all have lengthy criminal records.

Carter, however, hadn't had any run-ins with the law. Carter attended Delavan's Wisconsin School for the Deaf, where news of the shooting hit hard.

"He was always smiling. He was one of those kids who was basically very happy," Alex Slappy, the head of Wisconsin School for the Deaf said.

School officials say on campus, Carter was able to escape from a life in the inner city, and overcome a setback of a lack of hearing. Carter spent five days a week living on campus during the school year. School officials say he was a member of the school's football team.

Officials say Carter had friends from school living throughout the state, and notifying them of Carter's death was a challenge.

"It is hard for us to reach them, so we posted on our website a video and phone number they can call, and call our counselors, who are here throughout the summer," Slappy said.

School officials say most students have been notified with the help of social networking.

Back in Milwaukee, Carter's loved ones ask the person responsible to turn themselves in.

"I don't wish nothing upon nobody. I just want peace," one family member said.

Carter's family took part in an emotional vigil and anti-violence neighborhood rally Wednesday night. The group called for a "community cease fire."
