2 juveniles in custody following carjacking, police pursuit that ended in Whitefish Bay
WHITEFISH BAY -- Two juveniles were taken into custody early Thursday morning, July 19 following a carjacking and police pursuit that ended in Whitefish Bay. Milwaukee police said a handgun was recovered.
"It's unfortunate. I think it's... I don't know who the people are but I think it's unfortunate," said a man who lives nearby.
Milwaukee police say their investigation started with an armed robbery that happened just after 1 a.m., near 31st and Villard. Suspects armed with a gun approached the victim and demanded property. The suspects took the keys to the victim's vehicle and fled the scene.
"It could've been me. It could've been one of my neighbors," said Brenda Cogshell.
Those learning of the carjacking a few blocks away shared their concerns.
"What if the gun went off and accidentally killed the person?" said Cogshell.
Police spotted the stolen car just after 2 a.m. A pursuit ensued, and took officers four miles away to Whitefish Bay. Stop sticks were used to puncture the tires of the stolen vehicle -- ending the chase near School and Berkeley Boulevard.
"It was the rims with no air in the tires and then hitting the little tree," said a man who lives nearby.
Witnesses said people were told to stay indoors by police when the suspects fled from the vehicle.
"I think people are a little bit surprised and they said 'I want to go out and check it out' but they said 'don't come out.' The officers had their weapons drawn," said a man who lives nearby.
The suspects turned out to be juveniles. Both were arrested. A handgun was recovered.
No one was hurt in the chase. The investigation is ongoing.
