MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- On Wednesday, August 20th, 2,000 freshmen will begin calling Milwaukee home when they move into residence halls on the Marquette University campus. Through Sunday, August 24th, freshmen will participate in New Student Orientation, including organized activities on campus and throughout Milwaukee.
A green freshman class
As part of an environmental sustainability initiative, Marquette University Student Government will provide reusable water bottles to each new freshman, and has invested in the installation of water bottle refilling stations in nine buildings across campus. In addition, MUSG will partner with Sodexo, Marquette’s dining services provider, to implement the Ozzi reusable to-go container service on campus.
Each new freshman will receive a free Ozzi container, and container return stations will be available in the Alumni Memorial Union to help reduce the amount of waste in Marquette dining halls.
President Lovell welcomes class of 2018
Marquette University President Dr. Michael R. Lovell will officially welcome the class of 2018 during New Student Convocation, Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center, 770 N. 12th St. Civil rights leader and Georgia Congressman John Lewis will provide the keynote address at the event and will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree, in recognition of his courageous leadership for civil rights and years of public service. A mult-box will be available to broadcast outlets for audio.
The back-to-school Square Dance is a 30-year-old tradition that teaches Marquette staff and students how to do-si-do and promenade. The dance is held from10 p.m. until 1 a.m. in Central Mall behind Raynor Memorial Libraries, 1355 W. Wisconsin Ave.
Freshman discuss the civil rights movement
On Thursday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., freshman will participate in the First Year Reading Program discussion. This year’s selected text is the graphic novel March: Book One, by Rep. John Lewis. The First Year Reading Program, now in its thirteenth year, encourages incoming freshman to read a common text, participate in online discussions during the summer and engage in discussion during New Student Orientation.
Dedication to service
Teams of students will participate in Urban Connection, Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Led by an Orientation student staff member, students will participate in various community service projects throughout Milwaukee. Participating in Urban Connection is convenient way to learn about service at Marquette as well as a way for new students to make a difference in their new community and meet new classmates
Mass of the Holy Spirit
The all-university Mass of the Holy Spirit brings together the entire campus community for the first time this academic year at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Gesu, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave.
