28 drunken drivers arrested during Labor Day DUI enforcement

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- During the past holiday weekend, Milwaukee County Sheriff Clarke ordered increased Drive Sober patrols beginning Friday, August 30, through Tuesday, September 3. The initiative focused on keeping the public safe through increased traffic enforcement.

The Sheriff’s Office enforcement initiative resulted in the following arrests, citations, and calls for service:


    Additional MCSO Drive Sober Statistics:
    -        The first DUI arrest occurred at 01:31 AM on Friday, August 30
    -        The last DUI arrest took place at 02:40 on Tuesday, September 3
    -        The average prohibited alcohol level was .14
    -        The highest prohibited alcohol level was .24
    -        A total of 8 drunk drivers had prior convictions
    o        4 drunk drivers had 1 prior conviction (2nd Offense DUI)
    o        3 drunk drivers had 2 prior convictions (3rd Offense DUI)
    o        1 drunk driver had 4 prior convictions (5th Offense DUI)

    Note: Only two (2) of the 28 DUI arrests were from out of state.

    MCSO conducted seven motorcycle ride escorts throughout the county over the holiday weekend pertaining to the Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary celebration.

    MCSO Deputies made 3 weapon-related arrests over the weekend:


      Repeat impaired driving arrests included a fifth-time offender, Brent Schadde, age 54, of Port Washington on Sunday at about 9:45 p.m. Deputies found him passed out at the wheel with the engine running and the vehicle in drive on I-794 eastbound at N. Jackson Street.  Schadde admitted to taking a handful of pills, failed field sobriety tests, and a search warrant was obtained to take a blood draw.  His prior convictions were in September 1990, June 1991, August 1995 and January 1998.  He faces up to six years in prison if convicted.

      Three-time repeat offenders included Retha McCoy, age 50, of Milwaukee, who was arrested by deputies just two weeks ago for driving drunk with eight children, ages 1 ½ to 16-years-old, in the car.  This weekend she was arrested with a .12 PBT.

      Other three-time offenders included Russell Warner, age 28, of West Allis and Ruben Silva, age 26, of Cudahy.

      A 2nd-Offense DUI was also arrested for 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety after he intentionally crossed over into oncoming traffic in an attempt to kill himself. Delbert Thacker, age 61, of Union Grove, struck a tree.

      Royce Bernard, age 41, of Milwaukee, also faces his second offense DUI, and will be charged with Endangering Safety by Use of a Dangerous Weapon and CCW for possession of a handgun.

      Other two-time offenders included Sean Carolan, age 26, of Brown Deer and Robert Savage, age 31, of Milwaukee.

      First-time drunken drivers stopped this weekend included: 55-year-old Kathleen Wahl and 57-year-old Diana Smeltzer, both of Brookfield; 26-year-old Carissa Varga of Menonomee Falls; 34-year-old Aaron Ring of Fishers, Indiana;  34-year-old Mark Turner of Waukesha; 34-year-old Sarah Catalano and 25-year-old Christopher Schalewski both of Sussex; 38-year-old Tom Quinlan of Brown Deer; 52-year-old Teresa Suggs-Smith of Bridge City, Texas;  29-year-old Brandon Radke of Muskego;  and Milwaukee residents:28-year-old  Josephina Rodriguez, 33-year-old Bradley Polaske, 23-year-old Tommie Wells, 26-year-old Tyrone Dorty II, 27-year-old Edwin Sanchez-Gonzalez, 30-year-old Joe Fox, 62-year-old  Robert Crawford, 50-year-old  Edward Easy, 30-year-old Willie Anderson and 27-year-old Nicholas Reynosa.
