38 cases in the state, and one at UWM: Students on campus offered free mumps vaccines

MILWAUKEE -- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students on Wednesday, December 9th were given the chance to receive a mumps vaccine for free.

The mumps vaccine clinic was offered to students after a confirmed case of mumps on campus.

University officials teamed up with the city of Milwaukee Health Department to provide the mumps vaccine.

After the mumps case was confirmed on campus, officials with the school's health center followed up with those who may have had close contact with the student affected.

There has been an increase in mumps cases across the state, health officials say.

"In the state, there's been 38 cases, which is a little unusual. We have an outbreak occurring in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater area. We've seen another university report a case, and again -- this is a very proactive measure to stem the tide of mumps transmission here in the university," Paul Biedrzycki with the Milwaukee Health Department said.

Mumps is spread through coughing, sneezing or close contact.
