4-year-old girl dies following crash involving dump truck in Cedarburg

CEDARBURG -- Officials with the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office say a 4-year-old girl has died following a crash in Cedarburg Monday evening, August 1st. It happened around 5:45 p.m.

The crash involved a Ford Focus and a dump truck.

The Focus was driven by a 35-year-old Jackson woman. It was headed westbound on Bridge Road.

The dump truck was driven by a 57-year-old Slinger man. It was headed southbound on Granville Road.

Sheriff's officials say the Ford Focus failed to yield at a stop sign on Bridge Road, and it was struck by the dump truck.

The 4-year-old passenger in the Focus was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities announced Tuesday, August 2nd that the child died as a result of the injuries she sustained from the crash.

The driver of the Focus was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the dump truck wasn't hurt.

Neighbors raced to the scene Monday evening to try to save the child's life -- and calm her mother.

"Every corner, there`s a house on the corner -- and the neighbors were out. Seeing them come out of their house and immediately go the driver and the passenger's aid as well as the truck driver's -- that's normal to see around here. I think it's common for Wisconsin. I have children of my own -- so knowing that a child was involved, I just put it aside and you just go and do your job and after it's all said and done, that`s when you think 'wow, that could have been me. That could have been somebody I knew.' It's not normal for everyday people to see a death -- and especially with a child," Captain Christy Knowles with the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office said.

Some neighbors have jumped into action after this crash -- asking officials to flag the stop signs, or cut down the bushes nearby -- anything to prevent another tragedy.

"It might lower the amount of times it does happen and yes, that's something the Township of Cedarburg probably will be looking at -- but that still might not have prevented the crash," Knowles said.

FOX6 News spoke with officials with the company that owns the dump truck involved in this crash. It is a family-run company that has been a part of the Cedarburg community since 1854. They said they are praying for and thinking of the family of the four-year-old girl who lost her life as a result of this crash.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol or drugs are not a factor.
