414 Day: Milwaukee events celebrate city

Happy Milwaukee Day! Events across the city celebrated all things Milwaukee on Friday, April 14.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson started out the day – also called 414 Day – by lowering a commemorative banner on the front of City Hall.

"This is a day that is tailor-made for Milwaukee," said Johnson. "It's 414, it's our area code."

This April 14 marks the 13th annual 414 Day, a time for folks to appreciate everything Brew City has to offer.

"The first year we did this, we had seven or eight people here," one man said. "Now we have like 150 people here."

While festivities kicked off early Friday morning at City Hall, events, deals, and even 414 salutes appeared across the city as its exclusive holiday grows in popularity.

"It's kind of cool to have a day dedicated to indulging the specificity of this place," said Patrick Nickelson.

Nickelson moved to the 414 from Minnesota in 2019 and is here to stay. That's why, this 414 Day, his team at Indeed Brewing brewed up a special flight to celebrate what the city may be most known for.

"One of them is a light lager – kind of like a Miller High Life," he said.

But for Nickelson and many others, Friday's celebration in the 414 came down to much more than its deals and events.

"People here are warmer than anywhere I've ever been," said Nickelson.
