61-year-old South Milwaukee pilot injured when helicopter crashed in Town of Norway
TOWN OF NORWAY -- Racine County Sheriff's officials say a 61-year-old South Milwaukee man was injured when the helicopter he was piloting crashed on Sunday morning, July 12th.
It happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. at the Guntly Airport -- in the 22000 block of West County Highway G in the Town of Norway.
Sheriff's officials say the first arriving deputy found the pilot was conscious and alert -- but he had sustained a laceration on the back of his head. He was taken to Froedtert Hospital for treatment. He was listed in stable condition at the hospital.
An initial investigation has revealed the pilot was operating a "Mosquito" helicopter, which is a small, one-passenger aircraft. Sheriff's officials say the helicopter is considered experimental based on its size.
According to a witness who was on the ground, the aircraft was hovering about 15 feet above ground when the aircraft lost lift and dropped to the ground -- landing in a cornfield. The witness said he saw the pilot exit the aircraft and walk towards the back. The witness told Sheriff's officials it appeared as though the pilot sustained a blow to the head from the aircraft's rear rotor.
The aircraft sustained very little damage.
The exact cause of the crash is under investigation.
The FAA was contacted, and responded to the scene.
The pilot's name hasn't been released.
