66-year-old man seriously hurt in wrong-way, head-on crash involving semi in West Bend
WEST BEND -- West Bend police say a 66-year-old man was seriously hurt in a wrong-way crash that happened near 7th and Washington Street on Monday afternoon, August 1st.
It happened around 1:00 p.m.
Police say the 66-year-old man was driving a pickup truck -- headed east in the 1000 block of W. Washington Street when he crossed the center line and started driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of W. Washington Street.
Near 9th and Washington, the driver drove onto the sidewalk and nearly struck a woman working in her yard.
The driver of the pickup truck continued eastbound in the westbound lanes of Washington Street to the intersection with 7th Avenue.
There, the pickup truck struck a semi that was in the right westbound lane of Washington.
Police say the driver of the semi was stopped for a red light and saw the pickup headed towards him -- sounding his horn in an effort to alert the driver of the pickup truck before the head-on crash.
The 66-year-old man had to be extricated and he was taken to Froedtert Hospital via Flight for Life for treatment of serious injuries.
The crash is under investigation.
