73 cats removed from Grafton home; 'uninhabitable' conditions: officials

A welfare check at a Town of Grafton residence led the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office to discover the homeowner and dozens of cats living in "unhabitable" conditions, officials said.

What we know:

A We Energies meter inspector contacted the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday, Jan. 22 to request the welfare check on the resident.

It was reported that the house did not have heat, gas or water. Also, several packages were accumulating at the front door, and dozens of cats were seen inside the residence.

Deputies made contact with the elderly homeowner. After speaking with the homeowner, it was determined conditions in the home were "uninhabitable" – and the homeowner was unable to take care of themself or the cats.

The homeowner was taken to a hospital for medical treatment – and provided consent to surrender the cats and remove them from the residence. 

The Wisconsin Humane Society – Ozaukee Campus was contacted to take custody of the cats and remove them from the home. In total, 73 cats have been removed.

The Ozaukee County Emergency Management, Ozaukee Central Fire Department, and the Wisconsin Humane Society – Ozaukee Campus assisted with the investigation.

No criminal charges will be issued in this incident. However, the case has been turned over to the Ozaukee County Human Services Department.
