90,000+ absentee ballots already issued in recall election
MADISON -- Thousands of Wisconsin voters are taking advantage of absentee voting for the June 5th recall election.
The Government Accountability Board says as of Wednesday, May 23rd, at least 90,000 absentee ballots had been issued by the state's local election officials. That compares to a total of 68,000 absentee ballots issued for the May 8 recall primary.
In a news release issued Wednesday afternoon, GAB Director Kevin Kennedy said, “These numbers confirm anecdotal reports we are hearing from local election officials that there is strong interest in absentee voting."
In-person absentee voting in the clerk’s office started Monday morning, May 21st and runs through 5 p.m. Friday, June 1st. Some clerks are offering extended hours to handle demand.
The deadline for voters to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5 p.m. Thursday, May 31.
Military voters and those who are indefinitely confined due to age, disability, infirmity or illness may request absentee ballots by 5 p.m. Friday, June 1st. Hospitalized voters and sequestered jurors must request ballots by 5 p.m. on Election Day. All absentee ballots must be postmarked by Election Day, and received by 4 p.m. Friday, June 8 in order to be counted.
