Third Ward shooting: Milwaukee police arrest Keasean Ellis-Brown

Milwaukee police on Tuesday arrested Keasean Ellis-Brown – the man charged in the shooting of an off-duty detective – after a standoff near 9th and Chambers.

The arrest comes after weeks on the run. The shooting happened on Jan. 13 at the Shake Shack in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward.

Police said they received a tip that the 19-year-old Ellis-Brown was at a home near 9th and Chambers and arrived there around 11:30 a.m. He refused to come out, Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said, and the tactical situation was established. He was taken into custody without further incident around 3:30 p.m.

"I’m very appreciative how this serious incident was able to be resolved in a peaceful manner," Norman said.

Investigators said the off-duty detective, since identified as Andrew Wilkiewicz, tried to stop a robbery at the time. He was shot four times, allegedly by Ellis-Brown, and survived.

."I would hope that he’s relieved," Norman said of Wilkiewicz. "I know that we’re relieved."

"I knew him seeing me, he’d come on down because he’s 19 and he’s scared," Ellis-Brown's grandfather told FOX6 News. "He made a bad decision, he made a stupid choice, but whatever happened, happened."

The grandfather did not say where Ellis-Brown had been, but told FOX6 that he was ready to take him to police before the standoff.

"This could’ve really had some horrible outcomes, but cooler heads prevailed," said Norman.

Two other men have been charged in connection to the Third Ward shooting – Dionta'e Hayes and Timonte Karroll-Robinson.
