A slam dunk: Basketball team, Bucks coach pitch in at the 'House of Peace'
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Thanksgiving is meant to be enjoyed with your family -- as well as with a good meal. Unfortunately, there are some Milwaukee homes without much to eat. That's where one Milwaukee basketball team comes into play.
Those who run the House of Peace on Walnut St. in Milwaukee understand how much work is involved in cooking that Thanksgiving meal -- and they could not be happier for the help being offered by Coach Kevin Schramka and his Dominican Knights basketball team.
"There's more things than basketball and studies. If you ask these girls, they are so glad they are getting out of class right now," said Schramka.
Mary Mansker is a guard on the court. On Monday, November 24th, she was feeding a greater need.
"Yeah, I mean, everybody deserves a turkey on Thanksgiving," said Mansker.
While the Dominican teammates fill the bins, people take their seats. A "full house" means a lot of dinner tables would otherwise be empty. That's exactly why another big name in Milwaukee basketball got involved. He's Milwaukee Bucks Coach Jason Kidd.
"This is the holiday season and being able to give turkey, to be able to see people smile is the biggest thing. And with the Bucks, being involved with the community, I believe it's the right thing to do," said Kidd.
Their time at the House of Peace gave families a chance to concentrate on preparing their own Thanksgiving dinner -- instead of wondering from where it was going to come.
