Alan Randall free almost 40 years after killing two officers

WAUKESHA CO. (WITI) -- Alan Randall was just 16-years-old when he shot and killed two officers outside the Summit Police Station in 1975. Now, after almost four decades in a mental health facility, 55-year-old Randall is being released.

Randall suffered from Schizoid Personality Disorder at the time of the crime but had shown no symptoms since 1989.

Release conditions forbid Randall from stepping foot in Waukesha County. He will reside in the city of Neenah in Winnebago County.

"I think the decision was a good one. It was probably better than what we had anticipated. We definitely didn't want him in Waukesha County," said Karen Herbert.

Herbert is the widow of Robert "Rocky" Atkins. She was married to him for just three months when he and his partner, Wayne Olson, were gunned down.

Former Summit Chief of Police James Schuyler worked with both fallen officers and was also the arresting Sergeant during the case. He feels Randall is no longer a danger to anyone.

"I think for everybody involved this is kind of closing a book and the final chapter and hopefully this is the end of it and everybody can move on," said Schuyler.

However Atkins' sister, Diane Stojanovich, says she may never find closure.

"I have seen no remorse in him over the years. None," said Stojanovich.

Randall has found a job at an art gallery, as well as a place to live, in Neenah. He has been ordered to have no contact with the victims' families and will soon be fitted with a GPS monitoring device for the rest of his life.

"I think this is about the best closure you're going to ever get," said Herbert.

Randall and his attorney had no comment on Friday, September 20th.
