SOUTH MILWAUKEE -- FOX6 News has learned another Colorado shooting victim has ties to the Milwaukee area. 23-year-old Micayla Medek was among those killed. Her father Greg grew up in South Milwaukee and moved his family to Aurora, Colorado in the 1980s for a new job.
Medek's aunt Jenny Zakovich said her niece was declared missing and they found out Friday night Medek died.
Medek was with a group of friends for the premiere of the Dark Knight Rises. When the shooter opened fire on the crowd, all of Medek's friends made it out alive, but one friend heard Medek say she'd been shot. He tried to save her, but was ushered out as he saw her fall to the ground in the theater.
"She loved the Batman movie. She loved the adventure. She was looking forward to going to this premiere. Some good has to come out of this. It's hard for me to imagine what that is now, but something in Mikayla's name," Zakovich said.
Zakovich says her niece worked at Subway and attended community college. She said her niece was trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her life, only for that life to be taken too soon.
A memorial fund has been set up in Micayla's name to help her family with funeral expenses. The fund is at M&I Bank and is called the "Micayla Medek Memorial Fund."
Donations can be made to this account at any M&I Bank branch.
