Aspirus acquiring Ascension hospitals, clinics in Wisconsin

Aspirus Health is buying Ascension hospitals, clinics and transport services in central and northern Wisconsin.

The Wausau-based health care provider said it's acquiring seven hospitals, 21 physician clinics and Spirit Medical Transport from Ascension.

The acquisition includes hospitals in Eagle River, Merrill, Woodruff, Stanley, Tomahawk, Rhinelander and Stevens Point. No terms were disclosed.

Aspirus, a health care system based in Wausau, currently operates six hospitals in Wisconsin and four in Michigan, as well as 50 clinics, home health and hospice care and pharmacies.

Aspirus President and CEO Matthew Heywood said the company was interested in expanding access to primary care and specialty services in Wisconsin's more rural areas.

Ascension's senior vice president, Bernie Sherry, says the acquisition will put the facilities and caregivers in "a better position to serve the communities’ health needs going forward," the Wausau Daily Herald reported.

Ascension owns 24 hospital campuses and more than 100 health care facilities in Wisconsin. The company is the largest nonprofit and Catholic health care system in the country with more than 2,600 facilities, including 145 hospitals and more than 40 senior living facilities.
