MADISON — The Wisconsin Assembly has passed a bill doubling campaign contribution limits and allowing candidates to coordinate with shadowy special interest groups without debate.
Democrats had previously recused themselves from voting on the bill, and because of that they were not permitted to offer amendments or debate the measure Monday. Democrats argue they can't vote on it because they stand to personally gain from the measure.
The bill passed the Assembly on a 59-0 vote. It now goes to Gov. Scott Walker, who is expected to sign it. His spokeswoman did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
The bill also allows corporations to donate up to $12,000 to political parties and legislative campaign committees and removes a requirement that donors disclose their employer.
