MADISON (AP) — Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he wants to see borrowing for state highway projects cut by at least $800 million.
Vos said Tuesday that Assembly Republicans have not agreed to an exact amount. How to pay for transportation projects is one of the biggest unresolved issues that's led to an impasse among Republicans who control the Legislature and Walker in reaching a budget deal.
Walker called for borrowing $1.3 billion for roads and has refused to consider tax or fee increases.
Vos says he does not believe raising vehicle registration fees is an option given Walker's opposition.
Vos says reducing borrowing by $800 million would almost certainly delay work on projects like the Zoo Interchange near Milwaukee and the Stillwater Bridge in western Wisconsin.
