AstroWings' charity 'Fun Flight' benefits Grafton Boy Scout troop

GRAFTON, Wis. - AstroWings' Remote Control Aircraft club held its 33rd annual "Fun Flight" on Saturday, July 9.

The decades-long tradition brings families and plane-lovers together. Saturday's event benefited Boy Scout Troop 840 out of Grafton.

"It’s a chance for guys to come together and share their love for flying and have some fun," said Gary Greicar, AstroWings' club safety officer.

Greciar shares his love for aviation with his sons, Lance and Lincoln – a hobby they enjoy together through AstroWings.

"Once my boys were of age, I was like come on let's go out to the field and have some fun," he said. "I bought a bunch of airplanes, and I’ve taught them to fly, and they really enjoy hanging out with dad and the other guys at the club and just have a good time."

"We each have our own separate planes that we like to fly, and we like to fly each others' planes, too," said Lincoln.  

The fundraiser allows the Boy Scout troop to continue its adventures throughout the year.

"With more scouts joining and the troop growing, we need more incoming funds so we can buy more equipment," Lance, an Eagle Scout, said. "Help lower the costs of our outings, which keeps scouts in the troop and enjoying the outdoors, which is what scouting is all about." 

Though the fun benefits the boys, it doesn't mean aviation is just for them. Kaytie Butzke is living proof.

"It's fun. It's worth the money and time. You learn life skills and meet a lot of people," said Butzke. "Just try it." 

Though the event won't be back for another year, AstroWings members hope to inspire others to come join them in their unique hobby.

"We welcome anybody out here and any kind of airplanes. There's no rules, you just have to want to learn how to fly and want to have fun," said Gary Greicar.
