ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE: Man shot several times

RACINE (WITI) -- A Racine man is in serious condition after a shooting Friday night, May 17th. It happened around 10:30 p.m. outside of a convenience store.

On a normal day, there are man made sounds and others from nature on a busy street surrounded by homes. But Friday night, neighbors heard something out of the ordinary, and say it was a little too close for comfort.

"Usually no trouble," said neighbor Gloria Lerette.

But the normally safe neighborhood became the center of an attempted homicide.

"I saw police lights. Heard the police cars," said Lerette.

Racine police say around 10:30 p.m. Friday night, near the corner of Lathrop and Wright, a man walked out of SF Food Store and was shot multiple times.

"There were people coming all around, stopping and looking," said Lerette.

The 21-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital and later flown to another with serious injuries. The suspect ran from the scene.

"Real surprising. Like I said, it's usually quiet, usually safe around here," said Lerette.

It was a close call on street not use to violence. Neighbors are now ready to regain the safety they had 24 hours ago.

Police say the suspect ran eastbound from the convenience store. No one has been arrested at this time.
