Authorities identify Mount Pleasant officer who killed 18-year-old Ty'Rese West
MOUNT PLEASANT — Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Justice on Sunday, June 23 identified the Mount Pleasant police officer who shot and killed an 18-year-old man on June 15.
The DOJ said in a news release that Sgt. Eric Giese, a 12-year veteran of the force, fatally shot West, of Racine around 1:30 a.m. June 15.
Giese was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in a fatal officer-involved shooting.
The DOJ said Giese was attempting to stop West, who was on a bicycle. Giese pursued West on foot, and observed he was armed with a gun. The DOJ said various non-lethal methods were used unsuccessfully by Sgt. Giese in "an attempt to address the threat," including verbal commands and the deployment of electronic control devices. Lethal force was subsequently deployed. Life saving measures were rendered; however, such measures were unsuccessful.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, the DOJ said.
The investigation was ongoing.
