Barrett's budget plan suggests Summerfest pay more to city
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, in his 2014 budget proposal, says Summerfest should pay more for the city services it receives during the festival's 11-day run.
Mayor Barrett on Tuesday, September 24th unveiled his 2014 budget before the full Milwaukee Common Council.
Mayor Barrett's $1.4 billion budget includes getting additional revenue from Summerfest -- but it may not be easy!
"Given the state of Summerfest`s finances and the state of the city`s finances, we think it`s a good time to renegotiate that," Mayor Barrett said.
2013's Big Gig posted attendance and revenue increases over last year. Summerfest did not release specific dollar amounts, but officials say 840,000 people walked through the gates, and food and beverage sales jumped seven percent.
Mayor Barrett says Summerfest crowds put a strain on the Milwaukee Police Department, the Milwaukee Fire Department and the Milwaukee County Department of Public Works.
"We want to make sure we have the resources we need to operate the city," Mayor Barrett said.
Last June, additional police presence was requested, and officers increased patrols throughout downtown and the Third Ward.
However, there is a catch. The city and Summerfest's non-profit organizer, Milwaukee World Festival Incorporated are locked into a lease agreement until December of 2030.
"This is going to have to be something that`s done voluntarily because the fact is, there is a contract," Mayor Barrett said.
The group pays Milwaukee a little more than $1 million in annual rent.
A spokesperson for Summerfest declined to comment, saying the matter will be reviewed by its board of directors.
Mayor Barrett wouldn't say how much of an increase he thinks would be fair.
"We haven`t made a formal proposal yet. Summerfest has been a great partner to the city. We love Summerfest," Mayor Barrett said.
A public hearing to discuss Mayor Barrett's budget proposal is planned for October 9th at 6:30 p.m. at Milwaukee City Hall.
