"Be safe before you buy one:" Holidays hottest gift 'hoverboards' could have fiery consequences

FRANKLIN -- More airlines announced they won't allow "hoverboards" on board, for fear they could catch fire. Experts say it's not just in the air, but under your tree where they could be a danger.

Hoverboard

Some hoverboards have been known to go up in flames. So, FOX6 News spoke to someone selling hoverboards, about what is safe and what to look out for.

At Gift of Wings, the holidays are always busy.

"I haven't sold out yet, but we've sold a lot of them" said Scott Fischer, Gift of Wings.

One of the most popular items in Fischer's specialty store is the futuristic hoverboard.

"It's kind of a Segway without the big handle on the top," Fischer says.

The board glides across the ground with flashing lights. But before you buy one, store owner Scott Fischer says do your homework.

"It's really important before someone buys a hoverboard that they check out the boards and where they are coming from," said Fischer.

Not all hoverboards are made the same. Video shows some have spontaneously gone up in flames.

"There are a flood of these things coming in from China that are not certified at all and could create some problems," Fischer said.

Fischer says check the back of the board and look for two important certifications.

Hoverboard FCC certification and CE certification

"That is the FCC certification and that is the CE certification -- we want to make sure is on the board," said Fischer.

And he says don't be cheap -- safe hoverboards can range from $400 and above.

"We all need to understand if something is too cheap and too good to be true, it probably is," said Fischer.

It's a hot gift that could have fiery consequences.

"Be safe out there and most importantly, be safe before you buy one of these and make sure they're properly certified," said Fischer.

You should also be checking on the battery. Fischer says Samsung and LG are the most reliable.

All of the hoverboards sold at Gift of Wings have the proper certifications.
