"Be there for one another:" Milwaukee couple holds concert in an effort to increase the peace

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee couple is trying to increase the peace by hosting a concert and book bag giveaway Saturday, August 20th. Organizers hope other groups take notice and follow suit.

A group of Milwaukee artists want to cut through the noise.

"Last week was just chaotic," said Demetrius Brooks.

They're doing so by blasting a message of peace.

"We are tired of violence, we don't want that and we just want people to get along," said Rebecca Brooks.

The husband and wife team of Demetrius and Rebecca Brooks, have been planning this event for weeks. The gig was in the works long before violence erupted near Sherman Park a week ago.

"We were going to put together an album release party but I took the funds and said let's increase the peace in our streets," said Demetrius.

The local music producer assembled a lineup of artists to promote a show and spread awareness.

"This event is for everyone. We need to come together as a community and pray. We need to come together as a community and support one another," said Rebecca.

Children also received book bags, made possible through local donations.

Money collected at the door during the evening performances will in turn be donated to several Milwaukee organizations.

"We want people to know I am your shoulder to lean on. We can be there for one another," said Rebecca.

"We make music, that's what we do -- but at the same time we want to give back to the community and show the community that we care," said Demetrius.

Demetrius and Rebecca Brooks hope their concert will be an example to others, how to promote safe activities for families.
