Brewers extend winning streak with victory over Cubs, 4-2
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- What a difference a week makes. Last Sunday, the Brewers were in the middle of a 32 inning scoreless streak before coming back to beat the Cardinals. Since then, they've reeled off 7 straight wins, including a 4-2 win to complete a 3 game sweep of the Cubs Sunday.
During the streak the Brewers only trailed once. That was when Anthony Rizzo hit a 2 run home run in the 3rd inning on Sunday against Brewers starting pitcher Wily Peralta. That was all the Brewers pitchers would allow the rest of the game.
The Brewers would score on a fielder's choice to cut the Cubs lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th inning. Then in the 5th, Ryan Braun delivered the biggest hit of the game, a long 3 run home run to the upper deck in left giving the Brewers a 4-2 lead.
Peralta would go 6.2 innings allowing only 2 earned runs. John Axford got the final out of the 7th inning stranding 2 Cubs runners on 2nd and 3rd to end their threat. Tom Gorzelanny came in for the 8th and got through the inning cleanly. In the 9th, he walked the lead off hitter. That brought in Jim Henderson who shut down the Cubs and earned him his 4th save of the season. Peralta gets the win to even his record at 1-1 this season.
The day wasn't perfect for Braun, however. In the 8th inning he was called out on strikes by home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi. Braun then threw his bat high in the air and was immediately ejected from the game.
The Brewers, who are now 9-8 on the season, will take their 7 game winning streak on the road to San Diego Monday.
