BROOKFIELD, Wis. - A Brookfield police officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries on Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle while on the scene of a crash.

According to police, officers responded to the scene of a crash on northbound Moorland Road near I-94 around 11:30 p.m. During the initial crash investigation, a second crash occurred.

While a Brookfield police officer was investigating the second crash, a vehicle exiting from westbound I-94 onto northbound Moorland Road lost control and struck the officer.
The officer, who is a two-year veteran of the police department, was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

What's next:
The driver of the striking vehicle, a 20-year-old Brookfield man, initially ran from the scene. He was ultimately taken into custody nearby. Two passengers in the striking vehicle are cooperating with the investigation and were released at the scene.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is handling the traffic crash investigation involving the Brookfield officer.

The Brookfield Police Department said it is referring felony charges against the driver to the Waukesha County District Attorney’s Office for operating while suspended, causing great bodily harm and duty upon striking a person.
The driver is also being held on unrelated warrants at the Waukesha County Jail.
