Burlington woman faces 2 counts of OWI, accused of causing crash that injured 2 motorcyclists
BURLINGTON -- A 46-year-old Burlington woman is facing charges after two motorcyclists had to be taken to the hospital following a crash on the Fourth of July on Durand Avenue near Fischer Park.
Kristen Sewell
Kristen Sewell faces two counts of OWI causing injury. The criminal complaint notes an OWI conviction for Sewell in 2001 in Waukesha County.
The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July.
According to the complaint, a report came in that a vehicle had struck two motorcycles, and the operators of the motorcycles were lying in the roadway. Investigators learned a vehicle driven by Sewell had pulled out of a gas station parking lot in front of the motorcycles. The motorcycles then collided with the car, and the motorcycle operators were thrown from their bikes.
One motorcycle operator, a 55-year-old Kansasville woman, was taken to Froedtert Hospital due to possible head injuries. She also suffered several broken bones, and had "no memory of the crash," the complaint says.
The second motorcycle operator, a 62-year-old Chicago man, suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening, the complaint says.
The complaint says investigators noted an odor of intoxicants coming from Sewell, and she was slurring her speech. She was taken to the hospital because she was complaining of back pain. At the hospital, the complaint indicates Sewell admitted she'd consumed two glasses of wine before the crash. She was placed under arrest, and agreed to submit a sample of her blood. That sample was sent to a lab for further analysis.
Sewell made her initial appearance in court in this case on Wednesday, July 5th. Probable cause was found for further proceedings, and Sewell pleaded not guilty.
A pre-trial conference was scheduled for August 3rd. Cash bond was set at $1,000.
