BUSTED: Man accused of stealing vehicle from Kwik Trip in Mount Pleasant arrested in Chicago

MOUNT PLEASANT/CHICAGO (WITI) -- Eleven days after a vehicle was stolen from the Kwik Trip gas station on SE Frontage Road in Mount Pleasant, the suspect believed to be responsible has been arrested.

Mount Pleasant police say a 48-year-old Chicago man was arrested on March 21st following a pursuit in Chicago.

A Chicago police officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle in Chicago when the suspect failed to stop for the officer. While fleeing from the officer, the driver caused two crashes on an expressway in Chicago. The stolen vehicle was totaled.

The driver was eventually arrested, and through a national database, Chicago police were alerted to the fact that the vehicle was stolen out of Mount Pleasant. Chicago police contacted Mount Pleasant police and through an investigation involving the comparison of video footage evidence from security cameras at the Kwik Trip gas station in Mount Pleasant, positively identified this man as the suspect.

The vehicle stolen from the Kwik Trip gas station was unlocked, running and unoccupied. The suspect left a vehicle at the scene -- and that vehicle was identified as being reported stolen out of Illinois.

Police say the suspect also stole a hamburger from the Kwik Trip gas station.

Multiple felony charges have been referred to the Racine County District Attorney's Office. The suspect is being held in jail in Chicago on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle. He is currently on parole through the Illinois Department of Corrections. Officials say he has a prior criminal record, including fleeing a traffic officer.
