Candlelight prayer vigil marks one month since Sikh Temple shooting
OAK CREEK -- Wednesday, September 5th marked one month since a gunman opened fire at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek -- killing six and wounding three others. In remembrance of the tragedy, a candlelight prayer vigil was held on Marquette University's campus Wednesday night, September 5th with a tribute to the victims, one of whom remains in the hospital.
The tragic incident took the lives of six and left three critically injured before Oak Creek police brought down the gunman, 40-year-old Wade Michael Page.
Punjab Singh was one of three critically injured in the Sikh Temple shooting. Froedtert Hospital said Wednesday, September 5th Singh's condition was upgraded from critical to serious. Singh was shot in the head and critically injured in the August 5th shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek.
FOX6 News spoke with Singh's family Wednesday, who say after the shooting, they were unsure whether Singh would survive. Singh had remained in a coma due to injuries sustained, but Froedtert officials said Wednesday Singh no longer requires mechanical support to breathe and was transferred out of the intensive care unit.
Wednesday night, burning candles held by mourners represented the light they want to shine on the victims' families.
Many Sikh community members gathered Wednesday night to remember the temple tragedy and pray for those still suffering a loss.
"Letting them know they are not alone and we care about love and peace and unity,"
These actions helped soothe wounds that are still fresh. Raghuvinder Singh is Punjab Singh's eldest son. His father was shot in the head and still recovering at the hospital.
"I want to say for more people to pray for him. I believe in prayers and with blessing of prayers, he will get up," Singh said.
Vigil organizers say it was a way to remember the victims and also spread awareness.
"This vigil helps us come together and recognize and learn more about each other,"
