MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- We are learning more about a crash that left a well-known radio personality critically injured. Terrifying cell phone video shows the moments after the impact near Hampton and Fond du Lac on Wednesday morning, November 13th.
ESPN 540 says popular sports radio broadcaster Steve "The Homer" True is recovering, and has gotten visitors in the hospital.
This, after a crash involving two vehicles that occurred on Wednesday morning, November 13th near W. Hampton and W. Fond du Lac.
Police say 59-year-old True was headed eastbound on Hampton when he was struck by a car driven by a 44-year-old Milwaukee man that was headed eastbound on Fond du Lac.
Witnesses say the crash happened when the 44-year-old man failed to stop for a red traffic signal.
The cell phone video obtained by FOX6 News shows witnesses try to determine whether the man inside the car was alive.
"I'm a registered nurse. I just want to know if he is alive, first of all?" a witness at the scene says in the video.
The video shows a witness carefully try to help, while the camera turns on the man police say is responsible.
Police say the 44-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck True's vehicle was arrested on intoxicated use of a motor vehicle, causing great bodily harm. A source familiar with the crash scene says the driver already has a past conviction involving OWI.
True is a well-known radio talk show host for ESPN 540, where he is the co-host of the "Homer and Thunder" show from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. on weekdays.
With a sign, Mitch "Thunder" Nelles began his afternoon radio show on ESPN 540 on Thursday without his co-worker of eight years.
"I was (at the hospital) for about 45 minutes, and spoke with him for about 45 minutes, so that should tell you about what condition he is in," Nelles told FOX6 News.
Nelles says True is hurting, but alert and even joked with him.
Nelles took call after call on Thursday from listeners sending well wishes.
Craig Karmazin, President and CEO of Good Karma Broadcasting issued the following statement on Twitter Wednesday night:
True has also announced for Marquette men's basketball games for decades.
On Thursday afternoon, Marquette men's basketball Head Coach Buzz Williams spoke about his friendship with True.
"I think it's near miraculous he's alive. I would say he's doing better than you can possibly imagine after what had happened. He wanted to call the game on Saturday and I said 'no I don't think, I'm not sure you can go from intensive care from 11 on Thursday to our game on Saturday at 11' so I thought he should try to get ready to get on the plane next Saturday when we leave," Williams said.
True has been upgraded from critical condition to stable.
The suspected drunk driver remains behind bars. In his mug shot, he is wearing a neck brace.
Authorities say he has prior OWI convictions and has a long rap sheet that includes several drug convictions.
Police say this case is being handed over to the District Attorney's Office, and charges are possible in the coming days.
