City Hall bell rung to honor the victims of Sandy Hook shooting

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett rang the City Hall bell 26 times on Friday morning, December 21st in memory of each person who died in the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

Mayor Barrett also observed a moment of silence and asked all Milwaukeeans to join him in this solemn remembrance.

Governors in at least 28 states also called for a moment of silence Friday morning. The states honoring a moment of silence include Alaska, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

President Barack Obama ordered flags to half-staff last Friday in the wake of the shooting.

Flags will also fly at half staff on Friday, after being ordered lowered after the death on Monday of Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii.
