City of Milwaukee lays out new sustainability initiative
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett unveiled a new citywide sustainability plan on Tuesday morning, July 16th. The introduction to the plan took place at the Erie Street Plaza. The mayor said it was a strategic location.
“This is all about America's fresh coast and fresh ideas. That's why we are here on the shores of America’s fresh coast,” said Mayor Barrett.
In February of 2012, Mayor Barrett appointed a team to focus on sustainability for the city, which deals with meeting today's needs without compromising future needs, and 18 months later, “ReFresh Milwaukee” was born.
“What makes this effort so unique, and the recommendations so poignant, is the fact that residents set the direction of this planning effort,” said Mayor Barrett, “it was all of you that told the green team what matters to you and what challenges you face in your neighborhoods.”
Refresh Milwaukee’s main goal is to provide the city with a 10 year plan for sustainable development; basically helping people and businesses "be more green" so the city's resources last.
There are several goals in this program, including for mobility, job creation, food sources, water and energy.
