Colorado shooting survivors reaching out to Oak Creek victims

AURORA, CO (FOX NEWS) -- Sunday morning's massacre at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek is being felt especially hard in Aurora, Colorado. Two and a half weeks ago, accused gunman, 24-year-old James Holmes opened fire during a midnight showing of the Dark Knight Rises on opening night -- leaving a dozen dead and 58 others injured.

Sunday's shooting left six dead, along with the gunman, who was fatally shot by Oak Creek police. Three were critically wounded and remained in critical condition Monday.

Outside the Aurora movie theater memorial, the Oak Cree shooting across the country hit close to home. The desire to help is being put into action at the Sikh Temple of Commerce City, Colorado, where Sunday's time to worship became a moment to reflect on another seemingly senseless act.

On Facebook, survivors of the massacre at the Century 16 movie theater have reached out to victims in Wisconsin. After seeing the outpouring of support from around the world come to Colorado, some theater victims said they feel it is time to give back.

"Anybody who was here went through the same thing and puts us in the same category. We understand, we empathize -- in the same way that people in Columbine empathize, and the people who remember 9/11 empathize," one Colorado shooting victim said.

Trauma counselors like Brenda Smith believe Sunday's attack in Oak Creek could force some Colorado theater shooting survivors to relive the shooting from two weeks ago.

"You are just being hyper-vigilant. You are no longer able to think clearly and be reasonable and rational," Smith said.

Experts say it won't take much for pictures and sounds to trigger strong emotions for theater survivors. Those same experts say there are ways to combat those feelings of depression and anxiety.

"Just take time to notice how good it feels to be alive, to be well, healthy, to be safe right now," Smith said.

Even two weeks later, outside the theater it wasn't hard to find signs of love, support and compassion. It's those same feelings survivors say they'll be spreading to another small town hit with an unforgettable tragedy.

James Holmes is being held in the Arapahoe County Jail.
