Coroner IDs man killed by Appleton police officer
APPLETON (AP) -- Authorities have released the name of a 61-year-old man shot and killed in a confrontation with Appleton police.
The Outagamie County Coroner's Office identified the man killed as Keith Gabriel. An autopsy was done Saturday, August 11th, but officials at the coroner's office are not releasing details.
Appleton Police Chief Peter Helein says officers were called around 9:15 p.m. Friday, August 10th on a report of illegal fireworks. When police arrived, Helein says they found Gabriel holding a gun.
Sgt. Greg Peiper, according to Helein, radioed for help and told the suspect to drop the gun. Helein says Pieper then shot Gabriel, who died at the scene.
Appleton police have turned the investigation over to Green Bay police because an officer was involved in the shooting.
