Decision looms: Hamilton family eager to get answers, National Guard on standby

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- We could learn any day now whether the officer who shot and killed Dontre Hamilton in Red Arrow Park will be charged.

Since late April, the Hamilton family has been waiting to hear whether former officer Christopher Manney will be charged in this case. Manney has already been fired for action leading up to the shooting of Hamilton.

Supporters of the Hamilton family have spent month protesting -- demanding action.

"Regardless of what the outcome is, we want to continue to fight, we want to continue to bring equality to our city," said Nate Hamilton, Dontre's brother.

On Wednesday, Gov. Walker announced the National Guard is on standby.

"They will not be engaged unless there is a request from the county or one of the municipal police departments," said Gov. Walker.

No matter the decision, the Hamiltons vow to continue what they've started.

"Being able to stand up and speak your mind, that's what we'll continue doing as a family," said Nate Hamilton.

Despite wanting a quick decision, the Hamiltons say they do not want it right before the Christmas holiday. Another protest is planned at Red Arrow Park on Friday, December 19th.
