Dodge County residents in the Juneau area were evacuated from their homes after a crash caused a natural gas leak on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 29.
DODGE COUNTY, Wis. - Dodge County residents in the Juneau area were evacuated from their homes after a crash caused a natural gas leak on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 29.
According to the Dodge County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened on State Highway 26 near the airport around 2:30 p.m. The area within a 1-mile radius of the leak was evacuated.
The crash damaged an above-ground natural gas pipe, creating a significant leak. As of 9 a.m. Thursday, Alliant Energy said roughly 1,100 customers were impacted by the outage. Electricity had been restored earlier Wednesday evening, but it was unclear at the time if it may need to be turned off at any point for repairs.

As of Thursday morning, Alliant Energy said crews started entering homes in the Juneau, Burnett and Minnesota Junction areas to relight pilot lights. That effort would continue throughout the day, as it became safe to renter and stay inside homes.
There will be long-term road closures due to the incident, the sheriff's office said.
