Donald Trump, Sheriff Clarke talk about public safety in brief meeting in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE -- Before Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump rallies a crowd of supporters in Washington County on Tuesday night, August 16th, he made a stop in Milwaukee. The candidate met with law enforcement and veterans at the Milwaukee County War Memorial.

Trump's plane landed at Mitchell International Airport late on Tuesday afternoon. He traveled directly to the War Memorial where he had a meeting with Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke. Clarke said he and Trump spent their brief time together talking about public safety issues. He also said the meeting was planned before the recent unrest.

"Here's what I want out of a president. Let us police at the local level. It's a states rights issue. A state has a vested interest in controlling crime. Okay, support us, appoint an attorney general who's going to see local law enforcement as an ally in the pursuit of justice and the criminal," Clarke said.

Sheriff Clarke said the Trump campaign contacted him and asked if he would like to meet while the Republican presidential nominee was in town. He said it was an opportunity he felt he should not waste.
