Donation made to Froedtert Cancer Center on behalf of MPD sergeant
MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Police Sergeant Sebastian Raclaw is battling abdominal cancer, and recently, hundreds came together to raise cash for Raclaw and his cause. Monday, October 15th, that cash was delivered to Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin's Cancer Center.
In February, Sergeant Raclaw was diagnosed with Stage Four abdominal cancer (pseudomixnoma carcinoma). Doctors at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin's Cancer Center performed a very invasive 11-hour surgery in July -- removing all of the visible tumors.
"When we were first treated there was little answers that were known in terms of life expectancy. We knew it was a deadly illness to have. It affects so few people, but we didn`t know how successful the treatment process was going to be. Having Froederdt and the Medical College at our side and partnering through this surgical method -- that`s why I`m standing here today," Sergeant Raclaw said.
Sergeant Raclaw said he was so humbled and grateful to the doctors at Froedtert that he wanted to do something. He, along with help from the Milwaukee Police Endurance Club organized a 5K run to benefit research into this rare form of cancer.
"I wanted to be a part of the solution," Sergeant Raclaw said.
Monday, a $10,000 check was presented to Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin's Cancer Center.
"Sebastian has been a true inspiration to me and my partners and he has shown us that the human spirit is much more powerful than any cancer we have ever seen. We thank you not just for your generosity and courage but for providing us and everyone at Froedert and the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center a continued reason to fight harder, a reason to innovate and a reason to work tirelessly," Dr. Kiran Turaga said.
Sergeant Raclaw still has cancerous mucus on his liver and in his pelvic area, so that's being monitored. In the meantime, he looks healthy and is back to work at the police department full time.
