Don`t get strong-armed: What to look for in a gym contract

WAUWATOSA — It's the new year -- and you're ready to get in shape. Before you sign up at a new gym, you should make sure you know what you're signing up for.

It's a New Year's resolution on the top of many people's lists — getting fit.

Gym

At The Wisconsin Athletic Club in Wauwatosa, plenty of members started towards that goal before 2016.

"In the last couple years, we've seen a trend where it's really busier year-round than just in January. Our peak season is more six months -- like November through April. People are joining gyms more in October, November," explained Derek Deprey, the general manager at The WAC in Wauwatosa.

Deprey says no matter when you sign up, staying committed is about finding the right fit.

"In our world, we're asking for people to pay for something that 80% of people hate to do and they come in with fears," Deprey said.

Gym

When you sign up at gym, you shouldn't have to fear that the membership won't work out.

"Think about if you're going to join a gym, join a health club — this is your top resolution — do some research," advised Ran Hoth, CEO of the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau.

Hoth says the power of picking the right gym is in your hands.

"We all want to be lean and mean, but you've got to read your contract first," Hoth said.

If a gym doesn't give you time to look over what you're signing — run.

"One of the flags that we see at the BBB, a reputable gym or health club will give you the time to look at your contract," Hoth said.

Gym contracts can be long and confusing. Here's some things to look for:

If you're not sure what you're signing up for, just ask.

"Is your contract automatically renewed? How can you contact that fitness to club to cancel your membership?" Hoth suggested.

"There are no dumb questions," Deprey said.

Deprey says members at The WAC are asking the right questions.

"They want to know if it's month-to-month or a long contract. They also want to know if they're going to get complimentary time.  Do they have to join right away or can it be more a experiential buy?" Deprey recalled.

Deprey recommends making sure a gym has what you're looking for.

"I think programs is big part that people should be asking about," Deprey said.

If you're worried about getting started at a gym, Deprey says don't sweat it.

"I think the misconception out there is people need to be fit before they come into a gym and I will say, you don't have to be fit to come in here," Deprey said.
