Dozens wait overnight to buy iPhone 5
GLENDALE -- Worldwide, and even locally, people lined up for hours to get their hands on the new Apple smartphone - the iPhone 5.
"It's kind of like a tradition to come here and get it," said Rahman Kaur, who waited outside the Apple Store at the Bayshore Mall starting at 2 a.m. Friday.
"I have my laptop with me and old phone too, so all geared up and ready for the wait," said Lena Edstrom, who was also in line.
They were among dozens of people who camped outside the store with blankets, winter coats and scarves. Some even passed the time playing cards.
"Apple is the best product of all time. If you don't have a 5, you are insane," said Nick Pruitt.
Just blocks away, long lines also formed around the AT&T store.
"There were about 70 people in line when we opened up at 8 this morning," said AT&T Spokesperson Jim Greer.
"I always like to have the latest thing. It's nice to have the latest thing of course," said Anthony Jackson, who bought two iPhone 5s Friday.
For the most part, the iPhone 5 looks and operates the similar to the old phones. Compared to the iPhone 4s, the iPhone 5 has a bigger screen, a thinner, longer frame, a faster processor and its own turn-by-turn navigation.
For Evan Silko, he was sold on the upgrades.
"I definitely like the shape and the size of it. I think it's lighter. I'm excited. Look at it. I'm definitely happy to have it," said Silko.
But for others, it's the joy of owning the latest Apple gadget that is worth all the wait.
"I just like something new. It's the iPhone 5," said Jes Sartin.
If you are due for an upgrade, the iPhone 5 starts at $200. If not, retail price starts at $650.
For people holding out for the iPhone 5, there is an update for the old phone. They can head to iTunes for the update.
