Drop off your unwanted, expired drugs at the Waukesha Police Department

WAUKESHA (WITI) — In an effort to combat the abuse of prescription drugs, the Waukesha Police Department has installed a metal drug collection box in the front lobby of the police department on Delafield Street — where folks can drop off unwanted or expired medications.

The purpose of this drug disposal program is to provide a safe, secure, and anonymous collection and destruction of unused and unwanted prescription and non-prescription medications. The ultimate goal of this program aims to decrease the access to unwanted or expired medication.

"Get them locked up. Or if there is no longer a need for them, dispose of them," said Lt. Joe Hendricks, Waukesha Police Department.

Police say opiate abuse can lead to property crime and retail thefts, and say prescription pain pills are gateway drugs to heroin.

"Because the drugs are prescribed by a doctor, kids often believe that they're safe," said Julianna Davan, Drug Free Communities.

The following guidelines have been set for the Waukesha Police Department Drug Disposal Program:

In a statement, the Waukesha Police Department said:

The Waukesha Police Department continues to recognize the growing abuse of opiates in the community and the need for solutions. Therefore, working in partnerships with the community to provide services and work toward solving emerging social issues, the Waukesha Police Department has officially launched a Drug Disposal Program.

“The Waukesha Police Department will continue working with the community to provide solutions that aim to eliminate opiate abuse. Through this effort, we also hope to decrease the drug crimes associated with this abuse,” Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack said.
