Milwaukee apartment fire near Bartlett and Kane, life-threatening injuries

A 23-year-old Milwaukee woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition from the scene of an apartment fire on the city's east side Monday morning.

Milwaukee fire crews were called to an apartment building near Bartlett and Kane on the city's east side around 7:45 a.m. Monday.

The fire chief said a Milwaukee woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. The medical examiner said the 24-year-old died Wednesday.

The building is uninhabitable because of smoke and water damage, according to the chief.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but does not appear suspicious at this time.  

The Red Cross is helping those displaced find a place to stay.
