Evers says he'll probably appoint next superintendent

MADISON — Democratic Gov.-elect Tony Evers says he'll probably appoint his replacement as state schools superintendent.

Evers doesn't plan to resign his post until he's sworn in as governor on Jan. 7, preventing outgoing Republican Gov. Scott Walker from appointing someone to fill the vacancy.

After he becomes governor, Evers could appoint a replacement or call a special election to fill the post. He told reporters following a tour of American Family Children's Hospital on Wednesday that it's very likely he will make an appointment. He said he doesn't see an overwhelming need to for a special election.

Asked if he might consider Republican state Sen. Luther Olsen, chairman of the Senate's education committee, for the position, Evers said there's "all sorts of people" he'll consider.
