"Every step counts:" Mayor Barrett urging folks to "Walk 100 Miles in 100 Days"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is trying to get folks to be more active.

Mayor Barrett has launched a new program called "Walk 100 Miles in 100 Days.

The program is an effort to fight obesity.

Mayor Barrett says less than half of Milwaukee residents report getting recommended physical activity on a regular basis.

On the city of Milwaukee's website, Mayor Barrett has issued this statement:

"We can change this, one step at a time. That is why I am challenging all Milwaukee residents to join me in walking 100 miles in 100 days.

Why walk? It’s easy, accessible, and it could save your life. Regular physical activity has been shown to help control weight and lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and depression. Even better? It might just help you live longer.

Every step counts. Walk on your own, in a group, or join me at any of the community walks I’ll be hosting throughout the summer. To help me, I’ve enlisted walk captains to keep the momentum going.

So get up, get out, and join the movement."
