"Everything was blown across the room:" Elderly driver apparently loses control of SUV, crashes into home

GREENFIELD (WITI) -- Greenfield police are investigating an incident which involved an SUV with two people inside crashing into a home on S. 123rd St. on Thursday afternoon, April 2nd.

The accident left a gaping hole in the back of the home. Now, a tarp and some boards have covered it up. Surprisingly, the homeowner's family says they are very lucky.

Like a scene from a movie, neighbors couldn't believe what they were seeing.

"The car was racing. I'm standing at my back door, all of a sudden I see this SUV go right through the shed," said Wayne Liss, neighbor.

In a matter of seconds, a driver and his wife veered off the road in Greenfield.

"He went over a stump here, right through the shed," said Liss.

"Blew right into my parents' kitchen," said Steve Wolczak, homeowner's son.

Greenfield police say the driver, in his 70's, may have some sort of medical emergency.

"I came to my backyard to find what I thought was an explosion in my own shed. Turned out it was not an explosion. A vehicle had driven through it -- the center, and had gone airborne and crashed through my neighbor's kitchen wall," Karrie Jo Poppy said.

Officials say both the driver and passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries. The homeowners were not home at the time of the incident.

"He had his foot still on the gas pedal when they came and got him," said Walczak.

Steve Walczak's parents weren't home at the time.

"The entire cabinet and countertop and everything was blown across the room," said Walczak.

Tire marks show a clear path through several yards.

"Amazingly, he missed two trees, went through the backyard -- hit a small stonewall and a stump," said Walczak.

Now, a cleanup is underway.

"Everything is destroyed," said Walczak.

A movie-script ending -- luckily the home was the only thing seriously hurt.

"I truly believe my mom or dad wouldn't be here today," said Walczak.

FOX6 News got a chance to look inside the room, and it's truly remarkable. A refrigerator was pushed to the other side of the room, and the wall was completely blown out.

In the end, it's very lucky no one was inside the home at the time of this incident.
