WAUWATOSA -- During a 2:00 p.m. media briefing Monday afternoon, August 6th, Froedtert Hospital officials said three victims injured during Sunday morning's shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek remain in critical condition.
Froedtert Hospital's Director of Surgical Services, Dr. Gary Seabrook was able to read statements from two of the victims' families.
50-year-old Santokh Singh suffered a single gunshot wound that penetrated his stomach, diaphragm and chest. Singh had surgery Sunday, and another surgical procedure Monday.
51-year-old Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy is in critical condition in the ICU. Dr. Seabrook read a statement from Lt. Murphy's family, who said they are grateful to so many who addressed Lt. Murphy's needs at the scene, and in the hospital. The statement said Lt. Murphy suffered eight to nine gunshot wounds at the scene, as described by officials Monday morning, and that he was "clearly in a blaze of gunfire."
Both families extended their thoughts and prayers to the Sikh community and the families of those who lost their lives.
Froedtert Hospital officials expressed that as a Level 1 Trauma Center, Froedtert is fully prepared to handle a mass casualty event such as Sunday's shooting incident.
"The saddest aspect is that we see gunshot victims and injured patients every day. We saw three here yesterday, and it's not uncommon for us to see three on a nightly basis due to senseless violence. We are here to serve the community and try to prevent these senseless injuries. When we can't prevent them, we do all we can to treat them," Froedtert Trauma Surgeon Dr. Travis Webb said.
Webb said while Froedtert did not receive as many casualties as they had expected, they were able to mobilize services in rapid fashion and bring in support immediately.
"Sadly, there were losses at the scene. We wish we could have done something for those people," Dr. Webb said.
