Fatal crash: Motorcyclist killed after colliding with semi in Town of Sharon
WALWORTH COUNTY (WITI) - Walworth County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of motorcycle vs semi-tractor trailer crash at the intersection of County Hwy K and Townhall Rd, in the Town of Sharon on Sunday morning, May 17th.
Officials say 33-year-old Erik Belanger of Madison, the sole occupant of the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office. The driver of the semi, a 61-year-old man from Beloit, was not injured.
Initial investigation indicates Belanger was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Townhall Road when he failed to stop at the posted stop sign. The semi was southbound on Hwy K and did not have a stop sign. The motorcycle crashed into the side of the semi-tractor.
The Wisconsin State Patrol was called in to complete a post-crash commercial motor vehicle inspection. The Walworth County Sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit was called to the scene to investigate.
Supporting agencies who responded to this scene include Sharon Fire and Rescue, The Wisconsin State Patrol, The Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office, The Walworth County Department of Public Works, and the Town of Sharon Public Works. The Village of Walworth Police Department also assisted with traffic control. This investigation is ongoing.
