Feingold says Pence selection is "pretty extreme;" Ryan applauds Republican V.P. choice
MILWAUKEE -- Democratic Senate candidate Russ Feingold says the selection of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence to be Donald Trump's running mate is a "pretty extreme choice."
Feingold was asked about Trump's pick following a speech on Friday. Feingold is running for the U.S. Senate against Republican Sen. Ron Johnson.
Johnson's spokesman did not immediately return a message seeking reaction to Pence's selection.
Feingold says Pence is extreme on economic and social issues and is on the wrong side of issues affecting gays, lesbians and women. Feingold says "it's a pretty extreme ticket and one I think will lose to a more positive, upbeat ticket on the Democratic side once it's announced."
Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued the following statement on the Pence announcement:
"Mike Pence comes from the heart of the conservative movement -- and the heart of America. I can think of no better choice for our vice-presidential candidate. We need someone who is steady and secure in his principles, someone who can cut through the noise and make a compelling case for conservatism. Mike Pence is that man. Mike and I have been friends for many years, and he has put his principles into practice by passing the largest state tax cut in the history of Indiana and expanding school choice for Hoosier families. He will help bring real change to Washington, and so I will do everything I can between now and November to help our ticket and our party win a national majority."
The Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Brad Courtney released this statement:
"Governor Mike Pence is principled, respected and experienced. He is someone who spent his political career dedicated to public service and devoted to making America stronger, safer, and a place where people can live, work, and raise a family.
"He will be a great addition to our ticket, and as Americans look for a new direction to break the failed status quo in Washington, D.C., they will support Donald Trump and Mike Pence— rejecting Hillary Clinton and her record of scandal, self-interest and outright dishonesty."
