First woman in two decades to moderate presidential debate

(CNN) -- Candy Crowley, CNN's chief political correspondent and host of "State of the Union," will be the first woman in 20 years to moderate a presidential debate, the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday, August 13th.

Crowley will host the second debate between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney on October 16th in Hempsted, New York, at Hoftsra University.

The last woman to moderate a presidential debate was Carole Simpson in 1992. Barbara Walters also hosted two presidential debates, in 1976 and 1984.

In July, Crowley moderated a U.S. Senate debate in Virginia between former Governors George Allen and Tim Kaine. She also moderated a debate between U.S. Senate candidates in Florida ahead of the 2010 election.

Crowley's "State of the Union" airs Sundays on CNN at 9 a.m. ET and noon.
